My task in this regard is complicated by the fact that this book lacks a proper introduction which would appraise the theoretical and methodological issues involved. In a footnote to an essay entitled 'Economic Anthropology and Anthropological Economics' written in 1969, Sahlins informed us that it was originally written Symbolic anthropology studies the way people understand their surroundings, as well as the actions and utterances of the other members of their society.
